Grounding Point: Description and Operation

Grounding Points

General

There are two main types of grounding point in the car: those that are equipped with a component number, and those where the component is grounded
directly on to the chassis (e.g., temperature sensors, oil pressure sensors, etc.).

The information here deals with those grounding points that have a component number.

The grounding points to which a component is connected can differ depending on whether the car is a left-hand or right-hand-drive model. This can be
seen in the system diagrams.

Cables are sometimes collected in a crimp connection immediately before a grounding point. These connections will be found in the list of grounding
points.

The car's battery is grounded via two cables. One cable runs to grounding point G2, which is located on the side of the left-hand structural member by the
connector bracket.

Depending on engine variant, the other cable goes to the left engine mounting, the secondary air injection pump bracket, the support bracket under the
intake manifold or the starter motor lower retaining bolt.

The following connections between the grounding points are not are not shown on the circuit diagrams:

1. There is a redundant ground between the engine/gearbox and one of the wheel arches.
2. Grounding point G30A is connected to grounding point G31 via crimp J1, the underhood electrical center 342 and crimp J9/12.
3. Grounding point G3 is connected to grounding point G29 via the rear electrical center 701.
4. Grounding point G34S is connected to grounding point G43 via crimps J108 and J80
5. On 5D, a cable runs between the upper right corner of the tailgate to the side plate below the right rear window.
6. On the V6 engine, there is an extra ground cable between the cylinder banks.
