Crankcase Ventilation, 4-Cyl.

General

A new crankcase ventilation system has been developed for the Saab 9-5. The advantages of the new system compared with older ones are improved oil
separation, the vacuum pressure in the crankcase is kept more even, and the flow of air into the engine has been reduced. The latter is a necessity in order
to reduce the air quantity when idling because the Saab 9-5 has air cooled injectors (applies only to the 4-cyl. engine). 
The crankcase ventilation system has an external oil trap.

Operation

The engine crankcase ventilation is a completely closed system. The ventilation comprises a straight nipple on the camshaft cover. The crankcase gases
are lead via this nipple to the external oil trap which is connected to the crankcase via the camshaft cover and a breather hose, and are then evacuated to
the turbo's inlet pipe where the gases are mixed with intake air and then burnt in the engine. There is a return pipe for oil from the oil trap to the oil sump.

To avoid icing, the system is water-heated.
