Tie Rod Boot: Service and Repair
Dust excluder, steering gear
To remove
1. Raise the car. If a jack is used, safety stands should be placed under the car.
2. Remove the wheel.
3. Slacken the locknut.
4. Remove the nut securing the track-rod end to the steering swivel member.
5. Part the track-rod end from the steering swivel member with 87 91 287 Puller, 150 mm.
6. Unscrew the track-rod end from the track rod, counting the number of turns.
7. Used compressed air to blow the dust excluder clean. Remove the clips and remove the dust excluder.
To fit
1. Clean the track rod and ball joint as necessary and lubricate with lithium grease such as Shell EP B2 Code 71303, Shell Retinax A or the
equivalent.
2. Fit a new dust excluder to the track rod and rack housing. Fit new clips and using pliers 30 16 235.
