Battery: Service Precautions
Points To Bear In Mind When Handling The Battery
Avoid disconnecting the battery as far as possible.
1
Make sure you connect the battery correctly. Connecting the wrong polarity on the battery can damage the car.
Therefore, always connect:
-
The plus battery cable (red) to the battery's positive terminal.
-
The minus battery cable (black) to the battery's negative terminal.
When connecting an external power source, e.g. another battery:
-
Always connect positive terminal to positive terminal.
-
Always connect negative terminal to ground.
2
Never disconnect the battery when the engine is running.
3
Do not boost-charge the battery other than in exceptional cases. One of the battery terminals must be disconnected while boost-charging.
Do not boost-charge batteries more than 2 years old.
WARNING: The battery contains corrosive acid. If contact is made with the eyes, they must be washed with water for at least 10 minutes.
4
Always wear rubber gloves and goggles when doing any work where there is a danger that battery acid might be splashed.
5
Make sure the battery always stands upright. Otherwise acid may leak out and cause injury or damage.
6
Never place tools or other objects on top of the battery.
