Fuel Accumulator: Description and Operation

The fuel accumulator, Fig. 4, located under the floor in front of the fuel tank, is connected to the fuel line between the fuel pump and the fuel
distributor.
The fuel accumulator performs three functions:
It delays the build up of pressure in fuel system during starting, thereby giving the control plunger in the fuel distributor time to reach the bottom of it's
travel prior to the injection valve opening, and preventing an excessive amount of fuel from being injected.
The accumulator absorbs and dampness any pressure surges or fluctuations that may occur in the system.
After the engine has been stopped, the fuel system pressure drops to approximately 29 psi (2 bar) and this pressure is maintained by the quantity of
fuel contain in the accumulator. This action retains the fuel system pressure while cooling, thereby preventing the formation of air bubbles of vaporizing
fuel, which could lead to starting difficulties when the engine is hot.
