Main Relay (Computer/Fuel System): Testing and Inspection

NOTE:  The following LH-Jetronic system troubleshooting procedures should only be conducted after it has been determined that the engine, charging
system and ignition system are in satisfactory operating condition, and all electrical connectors and vacuum hoses have been checked for proper
connection and routing.

    Before performing any checks on the system relay assembly, disconnect electrical connectors from ECU and air mass meter.

Remove protective cover from ECU electrical connector. All readings should be taken from the back of the electrical connector. Ensure
terminal 11 of connector is grounded.

Turn ignition switch to ON position.

Insert one end of jumper wire into terminal 21 and other end to ground.

4.

Ensure relay is operating properly by checking for voltage across connector terminals 9 and 11.

If relay is not operating, proceed as follows:

a. Remove scuff plate, weather-stripping and carpet.
b. Ensure current is flowing between relay terminal 30 and ground and relay terminal 86 and ground.
c. If not, check lead between terminal 30 and positive terminal, then between terminals 86 and 30.
d. If power is present, use the jumper wire to ground terminal 85 and check power supply to relay terminals 87 and 87b. If no power is present

at these terminals, replace relay assembly. If power is present at terminals 87 and 87b, check brown/white wire from terminal 87 to terminal 9
on ECU, black lead from terminal 11 on ECU to ground and the yellow/white wire from terminal 21 on ECU to relay terminal 85.

e. Check power supply to air mass meter terminal 2. If no power is present, check brown/violet wire between air mass meter system relay

terminal 87b. Replace system relay, if necessary.
