SUBJECT:
NOISE FROM FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS ISSUE: 10/85-795
APPLICATION: 1985 900 MODELS
A very limited number of cars produced in Finland may have front hub nuts which were undertorqued and consequently produce a rattling noise from the
front wheel bearings. The cars which may be affected are listed below.
VIN Serial No. F7010326 - F7013752
Noise complaints can be resolved by following the procedure given here. Undertorque does not affect bearing life or its load carrying capacity due to the
sealed design of the bearing.
Tightening Procedure:
1.
Remove the hub cap and bend up the locking flange.
2.
Loosen the nut and re-tighten to 210-225 ft.lbs. (290-310 N-m).
3.
Lock the nut in the groove with a rounded punch to avoid cracking the flange when locking it into the groove.
NOTE! Never stake the nut flange in the same place twice and do not re-use a nut with a cracked flange.
