Hydraulic Control Assembly - Antilock Brakes: Service and Repair
Hydraulic Unit
Prior to beginning work, system must be depressurized. To depressurize the system, turn ignition switch off and press brake pedal down
about 20 times until positive resistance is felt in the pedal. The hydraulic unit and its' connections must also be thoroughly cleaned, to prevent
dirt from entering the hydraulic system.
1.
Remove lower trim panel from under the steering wheel.
2.
Remove heater duct, sound insulation from behind brake pedal, disconnect lefthand side defroster hose.
3.
Remove hydraulic pushrod pin retaining clip, then the pin from the pushrod.
4.
Remove air intake hose and coolant tank retaining bolts, then position coolant tank aside.
5.
Disconnect hydraulic unit electrical connectors.
6.
Remove retaining bolt from bracket between hydraulic unit and front assembly, then move bracket and electrical leads out of the way.
7.
Siphon as much fluid as possible from reservoir.
8.
On models with manual transmission, disconnect and plug hose for clutch cylinder.
9.
Unplug electrical connector for the pump motor at the hydraulic unit.
10.
Label brake hydraulic pipes and large bore return pipe.
11.
Disconnect brake pipes from valve block, then plug all pipes to prevent dirt from entering system.
12.
Remove hydraulic unit retaining nuts, then the hydraulic unit.
13.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque hydraulic unit retaining nuts to 16-22 ft. lbs.
b. Switch ignition on and ensure pump is operating.
c. Bleed brake system, refer to Brakes and Traction Control/Brakes/Service and Repair.
