Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Description and Operation
The electric cooling fan is mounted behind the radiator assembly and is thermostatically controlled. When engine coolant temperature has reached
about 92°C (198°F), the temperature switch will close its contacts, allowing the electric cooling fan to operate. On models with A/C, the circuit is
equipped with a crimped branch connection, because fan operation is also controlled by A/C operation. When engine coolant temperature decreases, the
temperature switch opens its contacts, de-energizing the electric cooling fan.
These vehicles are also equipped with a time-delay relay, which limits cooling fan running time after engine has been shut off. The relay that controls
this function is always energized when the engine is running. When the engine is switched off, the supply to the relay coil will be interrupted. After about
10 minutes, the relay will trip the supply to the fan motor, even if temperature switch is still closed.
