Coolant Temperature Sensor/Switch (For Computer): Description and Operation

Temperature sensor

Description

The temperature sensor supplies the control module continuously with engine temperature information.

The engine coolant temperature sensor consists of a brass body containing a resistor of NTG (Negative Temperature coefficient) type, i.e. its
resistance decreases with increasing temperature.

When starting from cold and during the warm-up period, the engine requires a much richer fuel-air mixture on account of condensation losses in
combustion chambers and the intake manifold.

As engine temperature rises, the amount of fuel injected decreases successively.
