Above all, modulator pressure affects the accumulators for clutches A and E as well as brake C and brake band C' so that smooth gear changing is
obtained, irrespective of engine torque.

Stage 1

The accelerator pedal is depressed. The modulator valve adjusts the pressure so that it is in a certain relationship to throttle pressure.

Stage 2

Since pressure boosting is no longer required, the modulator valve serves as a pressure reducing valve and thus maintains a constant pressure. The level
of this pressure is determined by the modulator spring. This stage starts only when the modulator valve plunger has reached the stop in the passage.

Throttle Valve

NOTE:  Component identifier numbers used in the following illustrations relate to specific steps in the procedures below.

Valves are illustrated in their positions when the selector lever is set to neutral.

This is designed as a pressure reducing valve for adjusting throttle pressure in relation to accelerator pedal position.

a. Closed Throttle

The accelerator pedal is not depressed. The throttle pressure valve plunger is in its starting position and there is no throttle pressure yet.

b. Partially Open Throttle

The accelerator pedal is slightly depressed. This stage is from closed throttle position until the throttle pressure valve plunger has reached passage 1. A
throttle 

c. Wide Open Throttle

The accelerator pedal is depressed to wide open throttle position (resistance can be felt), and the throttle cam is moved to the wide open throttle position.
This stage is from the point at which passage 1 opens until the throttle pressure valve plunger has reached passage 2.

d. Kick-Down

The accelerator pedal is depressed past the wide open throttle position and the throttle cam is moved past the kick-down position. Passage 2 is open in
this stage.
