Brake Caliper: Service and Repair
Front
Removal/Installation
1. Remove brake pads. Refer to Brake Pad
2. Loosen brake hose at caliper.
3. Press brake pedal fully to the floor and secure in that position.
4. Disconnect brake hose at caliper and plug hose and fitting.
5. Remove caliper.
6. Reverse procedure to install and bleed brake system.
Overhaul
1.
Remove caliper and clean housing.
2.
Remove dust caps and bushings.
3.
Remove spring from handbrake lever.
4.
Remove dust cover retainer, then remove dust cover.
5.
Remove plug for adjusting screw, then remove piston adjusting screw.
6.
Remove piston seal.
7.
Wash parts in solvent, rinse with clean brake fluid, and blow dry with compressed air.
8.
Replace any components found defective.
9.
Reverse procedure to assemble, noting the following:
a. Prior to installing piston seal, lubricate seal with grease included in seal kit and pack dust cover with grease.
b. Ensure dust cover is correctly installed in groove in cylinder.
c. Install caliper, then turn adjusting screw in until rotor is locked, back off adjusting screw 1/4-1/2 turn. Ensure rotor turns freely.
d. Ensure clearance between parking brake lever and stop is .04±.02 inch (1±.5mm).
e. Bleed brake system, then adjust parking brake as necessary.
