Ignition Control Module: Testing and Inspection
Checking the ignition discharge module
It the ignition discharge module is suspected of malfunctioning, the following method is recommended:
Tools: Ground cable 86 10 867 and test spark plug 86 11 386.
WARNING
The electrical ignition system generates voltages of 40 000 V. Such voltages may be fatal to persons with a weak heart or those who have a
pacemaker implant. In view of this, treat the ignition system with the respect it deserves.
Do not under any circumstances touch the ignition discharge module when the starter motor is running or in connection with spark plug
burn-off when the ignition is switched off.
1 Remove the ignition discharge module from the cylinder head.
2 Fit all the test spark plugs in the module.
3 Connect ground cable 86 10 867 to all the spark plugs and a good ground.
4 Position the ignition discharge module with the ignition coils downwards and in such a way that the electrodes are at a safe distance from
conducting material (ground).
Important: The ignition discharge module must be positioned with the ignition coils downwards so that the oil in the coils will provide
satisfactory insulation in the high-tension part.
5 Remove the fuel pump fuse (14).
6 Run the starter motor briefly and check that:
- sparks are produced by all the spark plugs
- no flashover occurs in the cover plate.
Note: An adapter wiring assembly will be needed when changing an M92 or earlier ignition discharge module as only ignition discharge modules
with electrical connections in the module itself are available as a spare part.
