9000 L4-2290cc 2.3L DOHC Turbo EFI (1992)
Figure 1
Drive gear, P/N 87 20 633
The metal drive is located on the right-hand side of the differential housing. It fits loosely on the housing and is held in place by a tapered roller bearing.
A roll pin is pressed into the inward-facing side of the gear. The other end of the pin fits into a notch in the housing which limits the amount of rotational
movement of the gear on the housing (Figure 1).
Driven gear, P/N 87 23 892
This plastic driven gear has 13 teeth and an outer diameter of about 19 mm.
Late Type, M8gDrive gear, P/N 87 27 232
This metal drive gear is also on the right-hand side of the differential but it is press-fit onto the housing. Because of the press-fit, the gear is no longer
able to rotate on the housing so the roll pin is not used. This gear is smaller in diameter than the earlier drive gear.
Driven gear, P/N 87 27 240
This plastic driven gear has 15 teeth and an outer diameter of about 22 mm.
Check of Speedometer Gears On Replacement Gearbox
Operational Check of Speedometer Gears On Replacement Gearbox
To check operation of speedometer gears before installation of a replacement gearbox:
1.
Remove plastic transport cap from top of threaded guide sleeve.
2.
Manually shift gearbox into "Neutral."
3.
Grab hold of both stub axles firmly and turn them in the same direction to rotate the differential/ring gear housing.
4.
Watch the center shaft of the speedometer gear. The shaft should rotate slowly as the differential is turned over. If not, proceed as follows.
Transducer Inspection Procedure
The electronic speed transducer fitted to the gearbox can be tested with the gearbox installed or not installed in the car.
To test in the car (this should be done before checking the gears):
1.
Locate the 2-pole connector for the transducer under the cowl cover. Unplug the connector.
