Steering Column Lock: Service and Repair

WARNING:  BEFORE ANY WORK IS UNDERTAKEN, REVIEW AIR BAGS AND SEAT BELTS. 

REMOVAL

1. Remove the battery negative cable.

IMPORTANT:  The engine should not be running while the battery cables are removed. This can seriously damage the A.C. generator.

2. Cars with airbag: Remove the two retaining screws securing the steering wheel airbag and electrical connections. Remove the airbag.
3. Position the wheel straight forwards.
4. Cars with airbag: Part the connector for the horn. Remove the steering wheel.
5. Remove the upper and lower steering wheel caps (4 screws)
6. Cut off the cable ties securing the electrical cables to the steering column assembly.
7. Remove the connector to the windscreen wiper/washer, direction indicators etc. from the steering wheel switches and remove the electrical cables

from the signal devise and the connections to the start switch. Part the connector for the airbag and horn. Mark both the cables.

8. Cars with airbag: Remove the two screws securing the contact roller and lift it out,

IMPORTANT:  The contact roller is perishable. Treat it as such.
