Thermostat: Description and Operation
CLOSED THERMOSTAT
From the coolant pump - through the cylinder block via a passage in the cylinder block - through the lower outlet in the thermostat housing -
through a hose to the cabin heating system - through a hose from the heating system - back to the pump.
NORMALLY OPEN THERMOSTAT
From the coolant pump - via a passage in the cylinder block - through the cylinder block - through the upper outlet in the thermostat housing (past
the thermostat) - through the radiator - back to the pump. A small amount of coolant passes through the lower aperture in the thermostat via the
intake manifold to the heat exchanger and back to the coolant pump.
FULLY OPEN THERMOSTAT
The thermostat closes the lower passage in the thermostat housing an all coolant is forced through the radiator.
