Planetary Gears: Description and Operation
The 4 HP 18 automatic transmission is equipped with a Ravigneaux planetary gear train. This consists of:

2 Sun gears of different sizes, each equipped with

3 Associated planet gears as well as
-
1 Planet carrier

1 Annulus.
The ratios in the different gears are obtained by the torque being transmitted to different gears in the planetary gear train while other gears are blocked.
Power transmission to the drive shaft always takes place via the annulus.
