Adjustment of Steering Wheel on Vehicles Equipped with Airbag

Application:
1989- 9000

Some customers may complain that they have difficulty in finding a comfortable driving position because the steering wheel is not adjustable on 9000
vehicles equipped with an airbag. The Factory has now developed a service procedure which will allow the steering wheel to be adjusted outward by 25
mm. See Figure 1. Note that this does not mean that the steering wheel is now telescoping. Follow the Action outlined below to carry out this
modification.

1989- 9000 models equipped with driver's side airbag

Action:

1.

Disconnect the battery negative terminal.

2.

Remove the steering wheel and coil spring. Be sure to point the wheels in the straight ahead position before removing the coil spring, taking care
not to damage it.

3.

Remove the steering column cover pieces.

4.

Remove the 3 screws from the combination switch bracket. Pull the bracket and switches back to allow access to the electrical connectors.
