Track Rod Ends: Service and Repair
REPLACEMENT
1. Lift the car and take off the wheel. If a jack is used then the car must be supported on axle supports.
2. Measure and note the distance between the track rod ends and the groove in the track rod.
3. Slacken the locknut.
4. Remove the nut securing the track rod ends to the steering swivel member.
5. Separate the track rod end from the steering swivel member using ball joint separator 89 95 409. If necessary insert a spacer under the bolt.
6. Unscrew the track rod end from the track rod.
7. Screw a new track rod end onto the track rod according to the previously noted measurement, but do not tighten the locknut.
8. Tighten the nuts securing the track rod ends to the steering swivel member.
Tightening torques: 55 Nm (42 ft. lbs.)
9. Fit the road wheel and lower the car to the floor.
Tightening torques: 120 Nm (89 ft. lbs.)
10. Check, and possibly, adjust the toe-in.
11. Tighten up the locknut.
Tightening torques: 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.)
