Parking Pawl: Description and Operation
The parking brake is applied when the selector lever is set to position P and works as a mechanical stop. In this selector lever position, the parking pawl
will engage in the teeth of the parking pawl wheel. This wheel is connected to the side shaft of the transmission and thus locks the final drive.
A preload spring ensures that the engaged parking pawl grips the next gap as soon as the car starts to roll, even if the pawl is resting on top of one of the
parking pawl wheel teeth.
A locking cone in the selector lever prevents the inadvertent release of the parking pawl.
On the other hand, the parking pawl cannot be inadvertently engaged at high speed as the parking pawl will slide across the teeth of the parking pawl
wheel (safety feature) and only engage in a gap at a lower speed.
The selector lever must only be set to P when the vehicle is stationary, since the pawl will otherwise be subjected to excessive wear if it is engaged when
the car is rolling.
