Modulator Valve

Valves are illustrated in their positions when the selector lever is set to neutral.

Modulator pressure simulates engine torque, to which the gear shifting carried out by the control elements must be adapted. At low engine torque,
closing pressure for engaging the control elements is low, whereas at high engine torque, closing pressure is high.

Modulator pressure actuates the system pressure valve and thus system pressure. In addition, modulator pressure affects shift sequencing valve 3-4 and
traction valve 3-4 and ensures that these cannot assume an intermediate position.
Above all, modulator pressure affects the accumulators for clutches A and E as well as brake C and brake band C' so that smooth gear changing is
obtained, irrespective of engine torque.

Stage 1

The accelerator pedal is depressed. The modulator valve adjusts the pressure so that it is in a certain relationship to throttle pressure.

Stage 2

Since pressure boosting is no longer required, the modulator valve serves as a pressure reducing valve and thus maintains a constant pressure. The level
of this pressure is determined by the modulator spring. This stage starts only when the modulator valve plunger has reached the stop in the passage.
