Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Description and Operation
General
The radiator fan is driven by an electric motor and is located behind the radiator. The radiator fan is thermostatically controlled. Switching on and off the
radiator fan is controlled by the Electronic Display Unit (EDU).
Certain variants have a two speed radiator fan. This radiator fan has significantly higher output than the normal one speed fan. The two speed fan is
activated at different coolant temperatures. The thermostatic switch that controls the two speed fan has two activation steps. This also means a new
coolant fan relay.
All cars with A/C or Automatic Climate Control (ACC) have a pressure switch which, at a pressure of about 16 bar, closes an electrical circuit and starts
the radiator fan at speed I. In certain markets, there is also a pressure switch which, at pressures over 22 bar in the A/C system, closes the electrical
circuit for a relay. The relay is then active and starts radiator fan speed II.
