Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable: Description and Operation
PURPOSE
The contact unit assembly is fitted between the steering wheel and steering column bracket to facilitate the connection of the airbag module to the
gas generator. The contact unit also conducts current to the horn through two separate leads.
CONSTRUCTION
The contact unit consists of a stationary part and a movable part. A coiled plastic strip with four cast-in conductors runs between the stationary and
movable parts.
There are two versions of the contact unit, the main difference between them being that the movable part can be rotated either five or seven turns
between the end positions. The number of turns is stated on the label affixed to the contact unit.
OPERATION
The contact unit rotates 2.5 or 3.5 turns from the end position with the wheels in the straight ahead position. If this is exceeded, the coiled plastic
strip could break at full lock and render the airbag system unserviceable.
