Standby Power Supply: Description and Operation

PURPOSE

For reasons of safety, the control module has duplicate power supplies so that it will remain operational even if one power supply fails. See the
wiring diagram for more information.

OPERATION

When the ignition switch is turned to the Start or Drive position, main current (+15) will flow via fuse 4 to pin 1 of control module 331 and
redundant current to pin 12 of the control module. The capacitors in the control module then take about 10 seconds to become fully charged, after
which the system is operational. The capacitors serve as a source of energy for activation of both the driver's airbag and the passengers airbag.

ACTIVATION

For activation of the airbag and seat-belt tensioners at least one of the front sensors, as well as the safety sensor in the control module, must sense
the retardation that occurs in a collision.

The contacts in the sensors close and the capacitor in the control module is discharged. This causes a firing pulse to be applied to the electric
detonators in the airbag and seat-belt tensioners.
