Knee Diverter: Description and Operation

PURPOSE

On the steering column assembly is a knee shield plate to which a knee shield of impact-absorbing material is screwed to cushion the drivers knees
in case of frontal collision.

CONSTRUCTION

The steering wheel and steering column assembly are of special design. To stabilize the steering column assembly in a collision, a wire is stretched
from the bottom of the A pillar, over the steering column assembly, and down to the floor reinforcement tunnel.

The steering wheel is not adjustable. There is space for an airbag and gas generator (airbag module) in the center of the steering wheel.

U.S. specification cars have a corresponding knee shield on the passenger side as well.
