Starter Motor: Testing and Inspection
External Inspection
Inspect the following items with the starter motor removed but not dismantled:
-
Check that the stop ring for the starter pinion is installed correctly and securely. The distance between the stop ring and the starter motor mounting
face should be 31.3 - 32.6 mm (1.22 - 1.27 in).
-
Since it is possible that the braided cable connected between the solenoid and the brush-holder assembly could short to ground, make sure that the
cable is well clear of the starter motor housing and remove any deposits of dirt, etc.
-
Inspect all seals, making sure that they are in good and undamaged condition and have been installed correctly.
Armature end float
To check the end float of the armature shaft, remove the end cover and measure the longitudinal movement of the shaft.
The end float should be 0.05 - 0.40 mm (0.002 - 0.016 in).
To adjust the end float, install new shims under the rear end cover.
