The damper incorporated into the in the MacPherson strut is of the gas-filled, twin tube type. The space between the tubes serves as an expansion
chamber.
The damper is an integral part of the MacPherson strut and can not be changed separately.
The piston rod is well protected against dirt and moisture by a rubber gaiter, to ensure a long service life. The bottom of the gaiter fits over the strut tube
and the top is held in place by the spring.
The over part is clamped in place by the spring.
The strut consists of a coil spring and interior damper with welded on spring cup and lower mounting.
The upper end of the damper piston inside the strut is mounted in a ball bearing pressed into a rubber bearing.
The piston performs two functions: it absorbs the energy stored in the spring and also the forces generated during acceleration, braking and cornering.
The damper piston has a diameter of 22 mm and is manufactured to close tolerance to minimize any play.
On cars with a sports chassis, the piston rod is hollow. This makes the piston rod lighter and more rigid.
