Component identifier numbers used in the following illustrations relate to specific steps in the procedures below.

There are two types of torque converter housing.
^
The new type can be used in both new and older transmissions.
^
The older type can only be used in combination with fluid pumps of the older design.
^
The new type of torque converter housing was introduced from transmission number 16850.
Removal
1. Remove the transmission from the car.

Use retainer tool No. 87 92 293, or equivalent, to secure the torque converter.
2. Set up the transmission in a stand using fixture tool No. 87 91 469, or equivalent.
3. Lift out the torque converter using the grips, tool 87 91 766, or equivalent.
4. Remove the torque converter housing.
