Piston: Service and Repair
Installation

Step numbers below refer to numbers used in the illustrations.

Cylinder head removed.

Pistons of different makes must not be used in the same engine.
The name of the manufacturer is cast-in on the inside of the piston.
1. Assemble piston and connecting rod by driving in the gudgeon pin, using a rubber mallet and drift. Make sure that the notch in the piston crown
faces the timing cover and that the numbers on the connecting rod face the exhaust side.
2. Install the gudgeon pin circlips.
CAUTION: To prevent the circlip from becoming dislodged under piston acceleration, it is extremely important to install the circlip with its
opening upwards.
3. Place the bearing shells in place in the connecting rods.
4. Install protective sleeves tool No. 75 19 531, or equivalent, over the connecting rod studs and oil the piston rings, bearings and cylinder.
5. Install the piston, using piston installing tool No. 78 62 287, equivalent.
6. Install the big-end bearing caps with bearing shells (connecting rod numbers facing in the same direction), then tighten cap nuts to: 48 Nm (35.5
ft. lbs.).
