Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Description and Operation
Electric Cooling Fan
Vehicles are equipped with either a one or two-speed cooling fan, which is located behind the radiator and is powered by an electric motor. A
relay in relay position G in the distribution center of the engine compartment is used for the one-speed cooling fan and also for the two-speed fan
when it is running at low speed. In relay position I in the distribution center of the engine compartment, is the relay used for the two-speed fan
when it is operated at high speed.
The cooling fan is controlled by the Integrated Central Electronics (ICE) system. ICE starts and stops the cooling fan at programmed coolant
temperatures by grounding the relay. The ICE reads temperature for 20 minutes after the ignition has been turned off. The cooling fan can run at
low speed during that time for a maximum of three minutes.
On models equipped with air conditioning, the ICE starts the cooling fan at low speed when the pressure switch on the desiccant container closes
(approximately 240 psi).
