Points to Remember When Diagnosing Faults

The data link connector is located under the dashboard adjacent to the steering column.

When fault diagnosis is in progress, the ignition switch should always be in the Drive position.

Read and note stored diagnostic trouble codes in all systems before disconnecting the battery and control module (if necessary).

Also check that the data link connector receives supply current and is connected to the correct ground and that the connector pins are undamaged
and firmly in place.

To avoid damaging the control module and/or components, always make sure that the ignition is switched off before unplugging the connector(s).

Always check that the control module's ground connections and supply voltages are correct.

It may sometimes be worthwhile unplugging connectors to check that the connections and pins are undamaged and firmly in place.
Plug in the connectors again and clear all diagnostic trouble codes. If possible, start the engine and drive the car to check whether the fault or faults
persist.

Since all signals round the 12 V level are proportional to battery voltage, the signal levels should be used as guidance only.

The 0 V signals indicate ground but on a sensitive multimeter could give an indication of a measurable voltage.

Never switch from one unit of measurement to another (e.g. from V, via I to ohms) on the meter without first disconnecting the instrument's test
leads.
NOTE: On completion of fault diagnosis, always clear the fault memory with the command "CLEAR FAULT CODES".
