Front Crankshaft Seal: Service and Repair

Replacing the crankshaft seal (in situ)

1. Relieve the belt tensioner of strain, using a ratchet handle extension, and insert a 6 mm drill, or equivalent, in the hole as shown. Exercise the

utmost care to ensure that the belt tensioner does not break at its end position.

2. Raise the car, take off the right-hand front wheel and remove the cover.
3. Remove the protective plate and install flywheel locking segment tool No. 83 94 868 on the flywheel ring gear.
4. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
5. Use a screwdriver to break off the old seal.
6. Install a new seal, using assembly tool No. 83 94 876.

7. Fit the crankshaft pulley,

Tightening torque: 175 Nm (129.5 lb ft) 

8. Fit the drive belt. Check the position of the belt on all pulleys and install the cover.

9. Fit the road wheel

Tightening torque: 120 Nm (89 lbs ft) 

10. Lower the car to the floor.
11. Relieve the belt tensioner of strain, using a ratchet handle extension, and remove the drill.
12. Start the engine and run it at idling speed for a short while. Then switch it off and check that the drive belt is correctly positioned.
