Subject:
Noise From Transmission
Application:
1994 900 Models
Some customers may complain about a whining noise from the transmission at speeds of approximately 28-43 mph. This noise can also be heard under
special driving conditions, such as, driving at a steady speed of 35 mph with light load and then lifting off the accelerator. It is similar to noise that might
come from differential gears.
A vibration damper is now available which eliminates possible noise and can be mounted on cars produced before the VIN serial number listed below.
Cars Affected:
1994 900 Models up to VIN R2021452.
The vibration damper is installed on all automatic transmission cars after the above VIN.
Parts:
Vibration Damper, Qty 2 P/N 45 45 091
Bolt w/Fixed Flat Washer, Qty 2 P/N 79 78 133
Action:
1.
Jack-up the car and place it on safety stands. Mount the vibration damper on the left-hand drive axle, 49.0 +/- 5 mm from the inner drive boot edge
(small end). Refer to Figure 1. Torque to 6 ft. lb. (8 Nm).
NOTE
Do not install the vibration damper on the right hand drive axle. The noise is transmitted through the left hand drive axle only.
2.
Lower the car and test drive. If the noise can still be heard, turn the vibration damper 90° and retest. Repeat rotation if necessary.
