Brake Caliper: Service and Repair
Front
Removal/Installation
1.
Raise and support vehicle.
2.
Remove wheel assemblies.
3.
Disconnect caliper brake fluid lines and plug opening.
4.
Remove caliper lock pin, guide pin and pin boots.
5.
Remove caliper from caliper support, ensuring not to damage pin boots.
6.
Remove brake pads.
7.
Remove two pad clips from caliper support.
8.
Reverse procedure to install.
Disassembly/Assembly
Disassemble
1.
Inspect lock pin and guide pin boots for damage. replace as required.
2.
Inspect piston boot and lock pin for damage, replace as required.
3.
Using suitable small screwdriver, remove piston boot ring and boot.
4.
Pad caliper interior with suitable cushion, then apply non-lubricated compressed air to caliper inlet hole to remove piston.
5.
Remove piston seal, then bleeder valve and cap.
6.
Clean all parts in clean denatured alcohol, then dry with non-lubricated compressed air, then blow out all caliper body and bleeder valve passages.
7.
Inspect piston for damage, replace as required.
8.
Inspect caliper bore for damage, slight corrosion may be removed using suitable crocus cloth, is excessive damage, replace caliper. Do not hone
caliper bore.
9.
Inspect seal groove for damage, replace as required.
Assemble
1.
Install bleeder valve.
2.
Lubricate piston seal using clean brake fluid, then install, ensuring seal is not twisted.
3.
Install lubricated piston boot to piston.
4.
Install lubricated piston to body, push piston to bottom of bore.
5.
Install boot ring, ensure piston boot outer edge is smoothly seated in counterbore, work boot ring into groove near open end of caliper bore. Do
not pinch piston ring between boot ring and body.
6.
Lift piston boot inner edge to release trapped air, then install caliper and Bleed Brake System. See: Brake Bleeding
