Evaporator Core: Service and Repair
On models with airbag, disarm airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
1.
Disconnect battery cable.
2.
Discharge A/C system, then drain cooling system.
3.
On DOHC models, remove air cleaner cover and air induction hose at intake manifold.
4.
On SOHC models, remove air cleaner housing.
5.
On all models, remove suction hose and liquid line from thermal expansion valve.
6.
Place protective cover over A/C hoses, lines and expansion module to prevent A/C contamination.
7.
Remove thermal expansion valve from evaporator.
8.
Raise and support vehicle.
9.
Move heater core inlet and outlet clamps up.
10.
Lower vehicle.
11.
Remove heater core hoses, then using suitable air hose, blow excess coolant from heater core.
12.
Remove left and right instrument panel end caps.
13.
Remove left and right center instrument panel extensions by disconnecting lower Velcro fasteners, then pulling rearward to unclip.
14.
Remove center air outlet trim panel by pulling outward, start at bottom then work upward.
15.
Unclip trim panel extension strip.

Remove upper trim panel screw cap. then remove upper trim panel, Fig. 8.
17.
Lift upper trim panel to disengage clips at rear edge.
18.
Pull panel rearward out of clips at bottom of windshield, then remove upper trim panel.
19.
Open glove compartment.
20.
Remove cluster trim panel four attaching screws, then pull upward to unclip.
21.
Remove lockpins, then disconnect electrical connectors from instrument panel lighting rheostat and rear window defogger switches, Fig. 3.
22.
Remove instrument cluster, then remove five glove box attaching screws, then remove glove compartment.
23.
Remove ALDL attaching screws.
24.
Remove steering column filler panel attaching screws. Do not scratch console with mounting tabs.
25.
Remove hood release lever.
26.
Remove instrument cluster attaching screws, then pull rearward.
27.
Disconnect cluster electrical connectors, then remove cluster.
28.
Remove radio and HVAC control panels.
29.
Disconnect lighter connector, then remove lighter bulb holder by rotating counterclockwise and pull straight rearward.
30.
Apply parking brake, then lift and remove parking brake filler panel at rear edge.
31.
On models equipped with manual transaxle, remove gear shift knob by pulling straight upward.
32.
On all models, remove ashtray, then unclip ashtray bulb holder.
33.
Remove window/lock/mirror switch by lifting at back edge and pulling rearward.
34.
Remove lockpins and disconnect window/lock/mirror electrical connectors.
35.
Remove console rear storage compartment liner.
36.
Remove console side screws, then remove console rear compartment attaching screws.
37.
Lift rear of console, push seat belt bezels from console.
38.
Remove instrument fuse block attaching screws, then remove dash reinforcement ground wire.
39.
Remove instrument panel junction block electrical connector and attaching screw.
