Driver/Vehicle Information Display: Description and Operation
Driver Information Center (DIC) Description and Operation
Driver Information Center (DIC) - IPC
The driver information center (DIC) displays important vehicle information and is used to warn the driver of certain critical vehicle conditions. The DIC
is also used to display Odometer, engine oil life and language selection. The trip odometer reset switch serves as an interface to reset the trip odometer,
reset engine oil life, acknowledge warning messages, select language preference and recall the season odometer when the ignition is OFF. The instrument
panel cluster (IPC) receives class 2 serial data messages from the body control module (BCM) or the PCM/ECM commanding the display of a particular
message. Once the IPC displays a message, it sends a class 2 message to the BCM to activate the associated chime if necessary.
Trip Odometer Switch
The trip odometer switch serves as a multipurpose switch to perform the following functions:

Reset trip odometer

Acknowledge warning messages
*
Reset engine oil life
*
English or French language selection
*
Recall season odometer
While in the odometer display mode, each trip odometer switch press for less than 2 seconds cycles through all available information options. Pressing
the switch for greater than 2 seconds resets the trip odometer to zero.
Odometer
The odometer information is stored in the body control module (BCM) and is transmitted to the instrument panel cluster (IPC) for display in the driver
information center (DIC). The IPC stores a backup copy of the odometer value in case the IPC does not receive a valid odometer reading form the BCM.
The last known good odometer value from the BCM is displayed by the IPC before ERROR is displayed in the DIC. When a non critical vehicle
information is displayed in the DIC and the trip odometer switch is pressed, the DIC displays the season odometer information. When the ignition is in
OFF or ACC position, pressing the trip odometer switch prompts the display of the odometer and trip odometer.
Oil Life Reset
The powertrain control module (PCM)/engine control module (ECM) sends the oil life remaining percentage to the body control module (BCM) via a
serial data message. The IPC receives a serial data message from the BCM indicating the remaining oil life. The DIC displays the current percentage of
the GM Oil Life System as determined by the PCM/ECM. When the oil life remaining percentage drops below 10 percent, the DIC displays CHANGE
ENGINE OIL. When the engine oil is changed, reset the engine oil life in order to clear the oil life remaining percentage display. The DIC displays OIL
LIFE until the trip reset switch is pressed for greater than 2 seconds. The oil life monitor resets after the switch press and the DIC displays RESET until
the trip reset switch is pressed again.
Language (Export Canada)
The DIC displays in either English or French. The DIC displays the language that is currently being used. Once the language transition function is
activated by pressing the trip reset switch, the DIC displays the new language
Driver Information Center - Mirror Temperature and Compass Display
COMPASS
The mirror uses two magnetic field sensors for compass direction. One sensor is for north and south, the other is for east and west. The mirror supplies a
signal and low reference to each sensor. As the vehicle travels with or against the earth's magnetic pull, there will be a change in voltage on one or both
sensors. As a result of the change in voltage, the mirror changes the heading on the compass display.
TEMPERATURE DISPLAY
The inside rearview mirror monitors the ambient air temperature sensor. As the outside air temperature gets warmer, the ambient air temperature sensor
will lower resistance. The inside rearview mirror monitors this change and will show this as a warmer temperature on the display. Temperatures
exceeding 62°C (143°F) will be out of the mirror's temperature range and SC will be shown on the temperature display. In colder outside air
temperatures, the ambient air temperature sensor will raise in resistance. The inside rearview mirror will show a colder temperature on the display.
Temperatures lower than -40°C (-40°F) will be out of the mirror's temperature range and OC will be shown on the temperature display. In cold
temperatures such as 3°C (37°F) or below, the temperature display will show ICE when the ignition is first turned on. The display will toggle between
ICE and the actual outside temperature until the temperature update process is complete.
