Rear Fascia Paint/Finish Scratching or Scuffing (Install Rubber Bumpers)
2003-2005 Saturn ION Vehicles
Fixed Operations Manager and Technician
Condition
Customers may comment on scratch or scuff type marks on the top surface of the rear fascia directly below and in line with the decklid applique.
Cause
The scuffs may be caused by decklid "over-travel" during closing of the decklid. If the decklid is closed with excessive effort, the decklid applique may
contact the fascia.
Correction
Install rubber bumpers to the bottom side of the decklid applique.
Service Procedure
1. Verify that scuff marks at top of rear fascia are caused by decklid "over-travel." If scuffing is caused by decklid, refer to the following procedures
for decklid applique bumper installation.
2. With decklid open, measure 152 mm (6 in) inward from the outer edge on the underside of the decklid applique on each side of the vehicle. Place
a mark at both locations in the center of the applique flange.
3. Locate the center of the underside of the decklid applique and mark that location.
4. Using a 5.5 mm (7/32 in) drill, drill holes at the three (3) measured locations.
5. Install decklid applique bumpers. If the bumpers are difficult to install, apply a liquid soap to the bumper prior to installation.
Important: In most cases, the scuff marks may be buffed out. In more severe cases, it may be necessary to finesse sand and clearcoat the fascia. In
extreme cases, the fascia may need to be repainted.
