Repairs and Inspections Required After a Collision: Service and Repair
Air Bag System
Accident With Curtain Air Bag Deployment
After a collision involving a curtain air bag deployment, replace the following components on the side of the impact. Deployment of a curtain airbag will
also necessitate replacement of the headliner. If you detect any damage to the mounting points or mounting hardware, repair or replace the mounting
points and mounting hardware as needed.

Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM)
Perform the inspections indicated above in Accident With or Without Air Bag Deployment. If you detect any damage, replace the component. If you
detect any damage to the mounting points or mounting hardware, repair the component or replace the hardware as needed.
Accident With Frontal Air Bag Deployment
REPAIRS AND INSPECTIONS REQUIRED AFTER AN ACCIDENT
IMPORTANT: The following SIR system components must be replaced after a frontal crash involving air hag deployment:

Driver inflator module

Passenger inflator module
In all types of accidents regardless of air hag deployment, visually inspect the following components and their mounting points and replace as required:

Driver inflator module
-
Steering wheel
-
Coil assembly
-
Steering column
-
Steering column foam energy absorber
-
Driver seat and belts
-
Passenger inflator module
-
Passenger seat and belts
-
SDM
-
Knee bolsters and instrument panel mounting attachments
Inspect the SIR coil assembly wiring and steering wheel for any signs of scorching, melting, or damage due to excessive heat. If the coil assembly wire or
steering wheel is damaged, replace them. The steering column and wheel must be dimensionally checked to determine if they are damaged.
Never use SIR parts from another vehicle.
Do not attempt to repair the driver or passenger inflator modules, the steering wheel, the SIR coil assembly, the steering column, or the SDM. Service of
these items is by replacement only. Verify replacement part numbers. No periodic maintenance of SIR components or system is required.
Accident With Passenger Side Air Bag Deployment
CAUTION: A PASSENGER AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT CAUSES BENDING OF THE I/P CROSS CAR BEAM BRACKETS THAT CAN
AFFECT A SECOND AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT AND INJURE PASSENGERS. TO HELP AVOID INJURY TO PASSENGERS, ALWAYS
REPLACE THE I/P CROSS CAR BEAM BEFORE REPLACING A DEPLOYED PASSENGER AIR BAG MODULE.
After a collision involving air bag deployment, replace the following components. If you detect any damage to the mounting points or mounting
hardware, repair or replace the mounting points and mounting hardware as needed.

I/P Cross-car Beam
After a collision involving air bag deployment, inspect the roll connector and the roll connector wiring pigtail for melting, scorching, or other damage
due to excessive heat. Perform this component inspection in addition to the inspections indicated above in Accident With or Without Air Bag
Deployment. If you detect any damage replace the component. If you detect any damage to the mounting points or mounting hardware, repair the
component or replace the hardware as needed.
Accident With/Without Air Bag Deployment
CAUTION:

PROPER OPERATION OF THE SUPPLEMENTAL INFLATABLE RESTRAINT (SIR) SENSING SYSTEM REQUIRES THAT ANY
REPAIRS TO THE VEHICLE STRUCTURE RETURN THE VEHICLE STRUCTURE TO THE ORIGINAL PRODUCTION
CONFIGURATION. NOT PROPERLY REPAIRING THE VEHICLE STRUCTURE COULD CAUSE NON-DEPLOYMENT OF THE
AIR BAG IN A FRONTAL COLLISION OR DEPLOYMENT OF THE AIR BAG FOR CONDITIONS LESS SEVERE THAN
INTENDED.
