Notice:

When compressing valve spring, ensure Valve Spring Compressor J43963 does not damage lifter bore. Step 13 positions Pivot Bar SA9124E-4
towards intake side of slot in Valve Spring Compressor J43952 which aids in compressing valve spring.

3.

Compress valve spring and install valve stem keys.

4.

Contact the Saturn Technical Assistance Center for the latest direction for repairing blue smoke on startup.

Procedure C

Important:

Perform Procedure C on all engines (any valve stem oil seal color).

1.

Re-install lifters in original location.

2.

Unlock crankshaft from water pump and rotate to 60° before top dead center (BTDC).

3.

Install camshafts with seals attached.
Refer to "Camshaft Replacement - Front/Rear" in the appropriate Service Manual.

Notice:

Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints,
lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping
force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts
and systems.

4.

Install camshaft drive sprockets in proper orientation using new bolts. Refer to "Camshaft Drive Sprocket Replacement" in the appropriate Service
Manual. (For 2004 Saturn L-Series vehicles, refer to SI Document ID # 1053149.)

Important:

For 2003 Saturn L-Series vehicles, check engine serial number to identify the correct procedure for timing belt replacement.

5.

Install timing belt. Refer to "Timing Belt Replacement" in the appropriate Service Manual.

6.

Install spark plugs.

Tighten

Tighten spark plugs to 25 N.m (18 ft-lb).
