Fuel Pressure Release: Service and Repair
Fuel Pressure Test And Pressure Relief Hookup.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire and personal injury, it is necessary to relieve the fuel system pressure before servicing fuel system
components. After relieving system pressure, a small amount of fuel may be released when servicing fuel lines or connections. In order to
reduce the chance of personal injury, cover fuel line fittings with a shop towel before disconnecting, to catch any fuel that may leak out. Place
the towel in an approved container when disconnect is completed.
When servicing the fuel system use the following precautions:
a.
Put a "CAUTION FLAMMABLE" sign in the workshop.
b.
Be sure shop is supplied with an adequate fire extinguisher.
c.
Be sure to disconnect battery ground cable before any service work is done.
d.
Use a suitable container to catch any fuel that may leak from the system during service.
e.
Always relieve fuel system pressure before disconnecting any lines.
f.
If the key must be turned "ON" while servicing the fuel system, always disconnect or disable the ignition, to insure no sparks occur near fuel
vapors. Always disconnect the fuel system electrically to prevent fuel discharge when the fuel is turned "ON".
g.
NEVER turn the ignition "ON" while servicing the fuel system unless the electric fuel pump is disabled.
PROCEDURE:
1.
Loosen fuel filler cap to relieve tank vapor pressure.
2.
Release fuel pressure at valve located on fuel delivery line at engine and install cap.
3.
Perform required tests or repairs.
4.
Reconnect fuel hookups as required.
5.
Connect battery negative terminal.
6.
Prime fuel system.
a. Cycle ignition "ON" for 5 seconds and then "OFF" for 10 seconds.
b. Repeat step 6a twice.
c. Crank engine until it starts (maximum starter motor cranking time is 20 seconds).
d. If engine does not start, repeat steps 6a - 6c.
7.
Run engine and check the system for leaks.
8.
Retighten the fuel tank cap.
WARNING: IF FUEL LINES WERE DISCONNECTED AT CONNECTORS, LUBRICATE STEEL LINE MALE ENDS WITH CLEAN
ENGINE OIL. HOLDING STEEL LINE, FIRMLY PRESS ON FEMALE COUPLER UNTIL A CLICK IS HEARD, THEN PULL BACK TO
CONFIRM ENGAGEMENT. PINCHED, KINKED OR DAMAGED FUEL AND VAPOR LINES MUST BE REPLACED.
WARNING: If clear plastic retainers are removed from the fuel lines, they must be replaced to prevent fuel line leakage.
