Headlamps - Stay On With Switch in Off Position

SUBJECT:

Headlamps Stay on With Headlamp Switch in OFF Position (Replace Headlamp Switch)

MODELS
AFFECTED:

1991 Saturns with vehicle identification number (VIN) 134913 and below.

CONDITION:

Headlamps may intermittently stay on after the headlamp switch is turned to the OFF position.

CAUSE:

The switch contacts for the "flash-to-pass" feature on the headlamp switch assembly (called the turn signal and headlamp dimmer switch
and windshield wiper and windshield washer lever assembly) intermittently stick closed.

CORRECTIVE
ACTION:

Replace the headlamp switch assembly with a new design headlamp switch.

NOTE:

The "Body/Collision Repair Service Manual" does not contain headlamp switch assembly removal and installation procedures. Please
photo copy the procedures on the following pages and insert them into the "Headlamps" section of the "Body/Collision Repair Service
Manual" for future reference.

PROCEDURE

HEADLAMP SWITCH ASSEMBLY

Removal

NOTICE:

Cover the driver's seat to protect the seat from damage.

1. Disconnect negative battery cable.

2. Remove steering wheel according to "Steering Wheel" removal procedure in the "Steering Service Procedures" section of the "Steering Service

Manual."

3. Remove two fasteners (5.5 mm Hexhead) and remove steering column upper shroud.
