Junction Blocks

JUNCTION BLOCKS

The power and ground distribution system used on Saturn vehicles uses junction blocks to help remove complexity from the wiring assemblies and
to provide central locations for circuit protection devices and relays.

With the advances in automotive electronics over the past few years, the size and complexity of wiring harnesses has increased. The use of
junction blocks helps to reduce the complexity while also reducing cost and mass. This is accomplished by reducing the number of cut leads,
eliminating the need for underhood sealed in-line connectors and sealed splices (for underhood applications), and the reduction in the bundle size
of wiring harnesses.

The Saturn vehicle uses two junction blocks. The underhood junction block (UHJB), located on the left inner fender in the engine compartment,
and the instrument panel junction block (IPJB), located under the center of the instrument panel directly in front of the console. These junction
blocks provide a home for minifuses, maxifuses, relays and electronic modules, eliminating the need for separate connections and mounting
attachments. They are also a central connection point for other major harnesses in the vehicle. Inside the junction block are layered buss plates,
that help reduce the number of splices in the harnesses.
