Engine Oil Appears to Leak from Rear Main Crankshaft Oil Seal SOHC (LKO)/DOHC (LLO) Engines with MP6 or MP7 Automatic Transaxles (Check
for Rust Preventive Seepage from Torque Converter)
MODELS AFFECTED:
1991 - 1994 Saturns equipped with MP6/MP7 automatic transaxles.
CONDITION:
Rust preventive may drip off the torque converter and seep between the engine and automatic transaxle mating surfaces. This rust preventive may puddle
on the torque converter housing during the initial heat-up cycle of the automatic transaxle. The location of the rust preventive seepage makes it appear
that engine oil is leaking from the engine's rear main crankshaft oil seal. Due to the location of the rust preventive puddle and its color and texture, it can
be confused with clean engine oil.
CAUSE:
Torque converters are coated with rust preventive during the manufacturing process.
CORRECTION:
Check for possible engine oil leak using a Black Light Kit (5A9175NE) and Oil Dye (SA9176NE) or equivalent black light kit and oil dye. Refer to
black light kit manufacture's instructions when testing for possible oil leaks.
1.
Clean the suspected oil leak area.
2.
Pour specified amount of oil dye into engine crankcase.
3.
Operate the vehicle under normal operating conditions.
4.
Direct the light towards the suspected area. The dye will appear as a yellow path leading to the source of the possible leak.
If an engine oil leak is present, follow the procedures in the "Engine Mechanical Service Manual" to repair the engine oil leak.
If no oil leak is present, wipe off the rust preventive and return vehicle to customer.
