TIMING CHAIN INSPECTION
1. Inspect chain for wear and damaged links.
2. Using suitable ruler, measure chain inner diameter, standard I.D. is 22.83-22.95 inch and service limit is 23.15 inch, (figure 22).
3. Inspect chain guides for wear and cracks, measure chain track wear, standard is 0.0 inch, service limit is 0.0984 inch, (figure 23).
4. Inspect timing sprocket teeth on crankshaft, camshaft and key for wear. Inspect camshaft thrust plate and sprocket thrust surface for cracks and
wear.
5. Inspect tensioner operation, release plunger lock, ensuring piston moves freely.
6. Ensure oil feed hole is open, submerge tensioner in oil or solvent, depress plunger and check flow from tensioner body, check cylinder block port
for blockage.
7. With timing chain and guides installed, measure plunger travel, (figure 24) standard is 0.045-0.388 inch, service limit is 0.8626 inch.
