CHECK:
Injector for leakage. Perform a fuel system operational test at the pressure test connector. 

SYMPTOM

Fuel ignites in intake manifold or in exhaust system, making a loud popping sound.

CHECK:

1. EGR for valve not opening - refer to EGR valve Code 32 and EGR valve replacement.

2. Intake manifold gaskets for leaks.

3. Misfiring, cross firing or cutting out under load.

4. Spark plugs. Check for wetness, improper gap, cracks, burned electrodes and heavy deposits.

5. Ignition coil connections.

6. Ignition system for moisture, dust, cracks, burns, etc. Spray plug wires with fine water mist to check for shorts.

7. PCM and ignition system for faulty grounds.

8. Secondary ignition voltage output with service tool SA9199Z tester, or equivalent.

9. Check engine valve timing and compression.

10. Check for worn or incorrect basic engine parts such as camshaft(s) heads, pistons, rock arms, lifters, broken or worn valve springs, etc.

NOTE:

^ Engine must reach normal operating

temperature.

^ Transmission in P (Park) or N (Neutral) range.

^ Tachometer and HC/CO meter calibrated and in hand.

TEST

^

Run engine at 2,500 RPM for approximately two minutes.

^

Insert HC/CO meter testing probe into intermediate pipe at least 40 cm (16 in.).

^

Check HC/CO concentration at idle.

NOTE:  Wait at least one minute before measuring to allow the concentration to stabilize. Complete the measuring within three minutes. If the
HC/CO concentration does not conform to regulations, see the HC/CO diagnostic chart for possible causes.
