Starter Motor: Service and Repair
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.
Remove air inlet tube and fresh air hose, on DOHC models, lift resonator upward to disengage from engine support bracket.
3.
Remove upper starter attaching bolt through access hole near intake manifold support bracket.
4.
Raise and support vehicle.
5.
Using suitable pliers, remove starter shield pin, then lift shield upward to release from solenoid.
6.
Disconnect starter electrical connectors and position aside.
7.
Remove lower starter attaching bolt.
8.
Remove rear starter support bracket attaching bolt.
9.
Rotate starter until bracket clears axle shaft support bracket, pull rearward toward lefthand side of vehicle to remove.
10.
Reverse procedure to install. Torque starter attaching bolts to 26 ft. lbs., starter bracket bolts to 22 ft. lbs. and starter solenoid terminal to 3 ft. lbs.
