SW2 L4-1.9L DOHC VIN 7 (1997)
4. Remove inflator module screws.
5. Lift inflator module out of steering wheel.
6. Remove integral connector lock device with small flathead screwdriver. Disconnect connector and remove inflator module.
7. Disconnect cruise control switch (if equipped) and horn switch connector.
8. Remove steering wheel attachment nut and discard.
9. Install steering puller onto steering wheel and remove steering wheel.
10. Feed wiring through the wheel and remove wheel.
11. Insert yellow tab into SIR coil assembly to prevent rotating SIR coil.
NOTICE: If yellow tab is not available, use tape to prevent SIR coil from rotating.
IMPORTANT: Failure to properly align SIR coil to steering column/steering gear system will cause the coil assembly to become damaged when the
steering wheel is turned.
Installation
INSTALLATION
1. Route wiring through steering wheel and install steering wheel onto steering shaft noting orientation notch that locates steering wheel in correct
position.
2. Remove yellow tab (or tape) from SIR coil assembly.
3. Install new steering wheel attachment nut.
IMPORTANT: Always replace steering wheel attachment nut with new nut. Never reuse old nut.
Torque: 40 N.m (30 ft.lbs.)
4. Connect cruise control connector and install switch (if equipped). Connect horn switch connector.
5. Connect inflator module to wiring harness and install integral connector lock device.
IMPORTANT: Always replace inflator module fasteners with new fasteners. Never reuse old fasteners.
6. Install inflator module into steering wheel and torque fasteners, being careful not to cross thread fasteners.
Torque: 10 N.m (89 in.lbs.)
7. Snap on screw covers.
8. Enable the SIR system. (Refer to "Air Bag(s) Arming and Disarming.")
Important Preliminary Precautions
CAUTION: SAFETY PRECAUTIONS MUST BE FOLLOWED WHEN HANDLING A DEPLOYED INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG).
AFTER DEPLOYMENT, THE INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG) SURFACE MAY CONTAIN A SMALL AMOUNT OF SODIUM
HYDROXIDE, A BY-PRODUCT OF THE DEPLOYMENT REACTION, THAT IS IRRITATING TO THE SKIN AND EYES. MOST OF
THE POWDER ON THE INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG) IS HARMLESS. AS A PRECAUTION, WEAR GLOVES AND SAFETY
GLASSES WHEN HANDLING A DEPLOYED INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG), AND WASH YOUR HANDS WITH MILD SOAP AND
WATER AFTERWARDS.
