Condition
Some customers may comment that the check engine light is on. Upon investigation, the technician may find DTC P0442 (EVAP Small Leak Detected)
set as current or in history.
Cause
This condition may be caused by an EVAP system leak due to the O-ring seal between the filter and canister being rolled, causing the canister to be
distorted.
Correction
Technicians are to perform a leak test and if a leak is found between the canister and filter, replace the canister and filter. To correctly repair this
condition, BOTH the canister and filter must be replaced.
1.
Perform the leak test using the Evaporative Emission System Tester (EEST). Refer to the Evaporative Emission System Diagnosis in SI for
instructions on the tester.
2.
Lower the canister and inspect the vent area between the canister and filter (see image above).
3.
If the smoke is coming from between the filter and canister, the O-ring between the canister and filter is likely rolled.
4.
Replace the filter and canister as an assembly.
