Fuel Line Connections In Engine Compartment.

FUEL SYSTEM OPERATION

The SATURN fuel system is comprised of a polyethylene fuel storage tank. This tank is equipped with a submersible electric fuel pump, reservoir,
and fuel level sending unit module attached at the top of the fuel tank. 
Fuel is delivered from the pump to the engine and from the engine back to the tank by way of nylon fuel lines with quick connect line connections.
Before entering the engine, fuel passes through an in-line fuel filter also equipped with quick connects. Fuel vapor generated within the fuel
storage tank is stored in a charcoal vapor canister where it is later purged and consumed by the engine.

WARNING:  Fuel/Vapor lines can not be spliced or repaired. The line must be replaced if damaged, they must be replaced with the same
line.

WARNING:  anytime the fuel system is being worked on, disconnect the negative battery cable, except for those tests where battery
voltage is required.

WARNING:  never drain or store fuel in an open container due to the possibility of fire or explosion.

WARNING:  make sure vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned. to help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist,
provide additional support for the vehicle on the opposite end from which components are being removed.

CAUTION:  do not allow smoking or the use of open flames in the area where work on the fuel system is taking place.

REMOVAL

NOTE:  1991 vehicles have a stone deflection shield to protect the line clip retaining nuts. 1992 vehicles have the stone shield integral with the clip and
the new clip can be used to service 1991 vehicles. The line clip retaining nut must be protected from damage caused by stones and other foreign debris.

Position vehicle on hoist.

Disconnect negative battery cable battery.

3.

Release fuel pressure at valve located on fuel delivery line at engine and install cap.
WARNING:  Whenever fuel lines are removed, catch fuel in an approved container. Container opening must be a minimum of 300 mm
(12 in.) diameter to adequately catch the fluid.

Use service tool SA9157E (or equivalent) to disengage quick connects at engine if required or at rear of filter. The canister purge line is
disconnected under the brake master cylinder.
NOTE:  To facilitate removal, it may be necessary to spray quick connects with penetrating oil to remove debris.
