Notes relating to the 09G 6 speed automatic gearbox
Gearbox
The 09G automatic gearbox is equipped with 6 forward gears controlled hydraulically. The gears 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are engaged mechanically when the converter cancelling clutch is closed thus avoiding converter slipping.
Torque converter
The torque converter is equipped with a torque cancelling clutch. The torque converter cancelling clutch closes depending on the load and the speed.
ATF
The ATF in the gearbox is a long-life liquid. It does not need to be changed during routine maintenance.
The ATF levels in the planetary gears and the final drive are verified and topped up at the same time → Chapter.
t  For the 09G automatic gearbox, only the ATF supplied as spare must be used. Other oils cause problems or even faults in the gearbox; ATF spare number → Chapter.
Self-diagnosis
Before carrying out repairs on the automatic gearbox, the cause of the fault must be determined using “Guided fault finding”.
“Guided fault finding” is carried out using the diagnosis centre -VAS 505X-.
Modifications in the shift points, up and down
When shifting up or down, the gearshifts are automaticlly selected using the possible range of gear shifts according to the position of the accelerator pedal and the speed of travel.
t  The possible range of a gear change will be adapted for maximum engine power during extreme ascents.
t  The possible range of a gear change will be adapted for maximum engine braking power during extreme descents
t  The engine braking effect may be used by directly selecting a specific gear using the Tiptronic, for example, when driving with a trailer on slopes.
